From the Land of Band Box Records

Early Long Play Vinyl from 1948-1956 – 10-Inch Format

10-Inch Long Plays were introduced in 1947 but didn’t come into vogue until the early 1950’s.  Very few rock acts appeared in this format during it’s run up until 1956 then fizzling out in the next couple of years – giving way to the 12-inch long play.  A wide variety of genres appeared on 10-inch but it was a showcase for big bands and orchestras even though their dominating era had passed by.

The adult record buying public supported these early 10-inch long plays  – The advent of the 45 format both in singles and extended play – opened up the market to the Baby Boom generation who were coming into a better fiscal standing (as their little big older siblings – who first supported rock and roll – already were enjoying).
