The British Invasion: Back Beat Number 1

June 15, 2011

Davies – Mayall – Korner

Cyril Davies - John Mayall - Alex Korner

By no stretch of the imagination did these three ever fancy themselves as neither Beat Merchants nor Invaders.  They were purists.  Korner and Davies cut their teeth in jazz and moved effortlessly to the blues.  Korner and Davies performed as a duo for about 6 years beginning in the mid 1950’s, both coming from the Chris Barber Jazz Band.  Then in the early 1960’s – Davies would break away to form Cyril Davies’ All Stars.  Korner would put together Blues Incorporated at about the same time.  Mayall would emerge from the Powerhouse Four then The Blues Syndicate to form his own Blues Breakers.

Literally hundreds of U.K. musicians would pass through the ranks of these three legendary artists including:

  • Nicky Hopkins (Cliff Bennett and The Jeff Beck Group)
  • Micky Waller (Brian Auger, Georgie Fame & Blue Flames & The Jeff Beck Group)
  • Jimmy Page (New Yardbirds and Led Zeppelin)
  • Ricky Brown (The Savages, Georgie Fame)
  • Long John Baldry (Hoochie Coochie Men and Steam Packet)
  • Charlie Watts (Rolling Stones)
  • Paul Jones (Manfred Mann)
  • Eric Burdon (The Animals)
  • Jack Bruce (Cream)
  • Mick Jagger (Rolling Stones)
  • Ginger Baker (Cream)
  • Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin)
  • George Bruno alias Zoot Money (The Animals & The Big Roll Band)
  • Hughie Flint (McGuinnes-Flint)
  • Eric Clapton (The Yardbirds and Cream)
  • Peter Green (Fleetwood Mac)
  • Aynsley Dunbar (The Mojos & The Jeff Beck Group)
  • Mick Fleetwood (Fleetwood Mac)
  • Mick Taylor (The Gods & The Rolling Stones)
  • Andy Fraser (Free

And many many more

John Mayall's first U.S. LP - 1966Cyril Davie' All Stars

Very little exists on vinyl during the British Invasion Era with Cyril Davies performing.  This long play released on Immediate Records in late 1968.  Cyril appears only on a single cut “Someday Baby”.  Original band members Carlo Little, Nicky Hopkins, Cliff Barton along with Jeff Beck formed after his death to record five of the side one tracks on this LP.

Cyril Davies All Stars

If anyone knows of any other U.S. released recordings during the Invasion era with Cyril or Alex Korner, let me know!  I am aware of some 1970’s work by Korner on Warner Brothers and Columbia.
