Manfred Mann Hits the Scene

Manfred Mann

This British blues-influenced Beat group came roaring onto the scene after three years together in the U.K. as Manfred Mann. Prior to that all five original members were called The Manfred Mann & the Manfreds, and then Mann-Hugg Blues Band.  Members included leader Manfred Mann from South Africa (keyboards), Mike Hugg (drums), Mike Vickers (guitar), Paul Jones (vocals), and Dave Richmond (bass).

Many others would pass through this long-running mainstream group including Tom McGuiness from the Roosters and later with McGuiness-Flint, legendary drummer Jack Bruce (Alex Korner, Cream, John Mayall, etc.), Mike D’Abo and Klaus Voorman both later with the Plastic Ono Band.  Manfred Mann would chart 8 times during the Invasion years, but their debut would be their biggest hit record in the U.S. climbing to number 1.  The song was penned by singer-songwriters Ellie Greenwich and Jeff Barry a duo who performed as the Raindrops in the U.S.  The group would endur far into the future as Manfred Mann Chapter III, Manfred Mann’s Earth Band and finally The Manfreds.

The Animals scored with a double-sided hit, their second chart success in the U.S.  “Walker” was a cover of the earlier in the year Timmy Shaw hit “Gonna Send You Back to Georgia”.
