Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil charted over 170 either together or with other writers. Their own beginning in 1962 as a team was with the modest success of “A Girl Has To Know” by the G-Clefs (#85 Billboard Hot 100). While not as strongly associated with the “girl group” sound as say the Brill teams of Carol King and Gerry Goffin or Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich, they still had their moments with acts such the Crystals, the Paris Sisters and the Ronettes.
They demonstrated a versatility ranging from compositions performed by Steve Lawrence & Edyie Gorme, to R&B acts such as the Drifters to U.K. performers such as Cilla Black, Cliff Bennett & the Rebel Rousers and the Shadows. Their final collaboration to make any noise was “I Will Come To You” performed by the brothers Hanson in 1997.
