Band Box 355 - Shelltones - Blue Castaway RThe following comment came in recently from the 45 Cat relating to Commerce City’s Shelltones in regard to their sought-after release on Band Box “Blue Castaway”…..

“You may be interested to know that the 45 Blue Castaway (flip side Mark’s Blues) by now deceased guitarist Mark Bretz was actually conceived by Mark, not by Cary Theil who did get credit for it. The lost bit of trivia here is that Mark was a classically trained pianist before he took up guitar (when he and I became best friends when we were both 11 years old in Denver). Blue Castaway is actually Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata played in reverse, something that Mark thought up.

Don’t know if you are in touch with Cary Theil, but say hello from Gabe if you are. I actually did some very minor occasional sit-in playing of guitar with the early Shelltones at Rollerama, a roller skating rink that once existed in Commerce City where the Shell Tones originated, mainly from Adams City High School where Cary Theil and Tom Garcia (rhythm guitar) went to school.

Anyway, there’s a bit of trivia for your collection.”

  1. Cary Theil passed away a few years ago. He had lived with me and my family in the months leading up to his death. Cary was the father in law of my middle son whom married Cary’s daughter Tobie whom are now divored.
