A Conversation with Jo
A had the pleasure of meeting with Jo during a Father’s Day weekend – while out garage sailing in west Arvada. Jo was tending to her garage sale items along with her daughter and son-in law. I noticed the Polk Toons LP’s shown below and asked her if she knew Albert Holman or the band members. It turns out that Jo was a long-time polka and Dutch Hop enthusiast from way back along with her husband. Jo resided in the northern part of Colorado (Sterling) where she explained that Dutch Hop and Polka were prevalent back in the day.
Jo also was very familiar with Polka band leader Herman Dinges who lived on the western boundary of Denver near Sheridan Blvd. Jo asked me if Herman was still living. As far as I know he is – as I did hear from him via a relative in 2013. Jo told me another favorite of hers was Carl Zellar (he recorded on many local labels including Jim Ward’s CLW label). Carl passed away some time back from a heart attack.
I asked her about Paul Weingardt who I only know via the Band Box LP titled “A Tribute To Paul Weingardt” by the Alpine Polkadots. Again, Jo said she danced often to Paul and his band – sometimes at Elitches’ Trocadaro Ball Room before it’s demise. She said that Paul and his band were all killed in a car accident while traveling to a performance either in Kansas or Nebraska. I am showing some additional LP’s I picked up this weekend as well. It was a little ironic that I came across two Dinges LP’s shortly after visiting with Jo!
