Great Concert Era at Denver’s Family Dog

The following are handbills from Denver’s Family Dog related directly to the Family Dog in San Francisco in California. In San Fran the Dog was described as a “free-spirited rock promoter named Chet Helms (teaming) up with a bunch of hippies and started putting on some of the greatest rock events of all time.” These performances took place in San Franciso’s Avalon Ballroom.

This was 1966. Graphic artists were hired to do the promotional flyers.  Starting in 1968 the establishment began being known simply as “The Dog”.  The psychedelic posters appeared no longer.  On occasion a local Denver artist would design a promotional piece.  These are difficult to find. The Denver Family Dog was a physical establishment and was operational in 1967 and 1968. There were 16 posters designed for the concerts in Denver most illustrated below.

  1. Very cool indeed! Thanks for posting. I noticed Lothar and the Hand People with Allmen Joy. Lothar and the Hand People was the one of the bands that “won” the KIMN Radio battle of the bands among with my band, Fuzz. Brings back great memories.

  2. Thanks for the posting. The Denver Dog’s posters are among the best of that era. One correction, the image at the top is not of the Family Dog (I was an attendee of concerts at the FD) but I think is a photo of the Doors performing in Colorado Springs around that same time.
