“Juice O’The Barley” Keeps the Irish Tradition Alive

January 9, 2017

Denver’s Purveyors of Irish Pub Music

Hixson, O’Donnell, Sherman and O’Dea

This information came in from long-time band member Bill O’Donnell recently:

“I go back a way in Colorado music. I was a high school classmate of Veeder Van Dorn and Joel Brandeis of the Moonrakers. Joel and I performed together as members of the GW High School band.

“The original Juice of the Barley formed and performed at Conley’s Nostalgia. Walt was never officially part of that group, whose membership included Tony McAleavey, Michael Kent, Clark Burch, and Frank Moore. Frank Moore left for Boston and McAleavey and Kent started performing with Walt and Clark as Conley & Company–based at McAleavey’s Sheabeen Pub in Aurora. Upon Clark’s death, I took over bass playing duties and performed with Walt until his death in 2003.  At that time, McAleavey retired from performing and Kent and I resurrected the Juice O’The Barley name, added 2 new players and continued to perform Irish music. Kent retired from the group on St. Patrick’s Day, 2015. The group continues with myself, Kelly O’Dea (with the band over 10 years), Scott Sherman, and Nate Hixson.”
