Atco records started up in 1955 a subsidiary of Atlantic Records with production man Herb Abramson at the helm of the label.  Musicians and groups deemed to “not fit” in the Atlantic mold were guided toward Atco Records.

It was the home to primarily pop and rock – but some jazz would find its way onto the label.  By 1991 the label merged with EastWest Records America (also Atlantic).

The name “Atco” was dropped in 1994 eventually joining up with Elektra Records for distribution purposes.

Rhino Records obtained the catalog and in 2006 paired up with Warner Music Group  signing new artists (some veterans actually)

Herb Abramson was born in November of 1916 in Brooklyn, New York.  He was the founder of Jubilee Records in 1946 with partner Jerry Blaine.  He would be approached by jazz music lover Ahmet Ertegun and together they would found Atlantic Records.

Abramson passed way on November 9th, 1999 at the age of 82.  He was awarded the “Pioneer Award” by the Rhythm and Blues Foundation in 1998.
