The New Mobile Strugglers – Loveland, Colorado
Well – a complete revision is in store here. I believe the Band Box group “The New Mobile Strugglers” had absolutely no history with the original Strugglers (shown below) – Our Strugglers apparently attended Loveland High School and graduated in 1967. Here they are below performing for another Loveland class back a few years ago. Most likely they recorded at Band Box during their high school days – say mid 1960’s. LP images provided by Doc Krieger.
The Strugglers were Steve Simpson (guitar), Bob Moore (guitar), and Marylen Willy (tambourine and vocals). I finally located the Band Box LP for my own collection at the “Big K Productions” 2015 Spring Record Expo in Denver.
March, 2016: I received notice from Steve Simpson’s daughter that sadly, Steve passed away on February 17th, 2016. A special memorial ceremony was planned for in March with both of Steve’s folk mates attending – Marylen and Bob.
This received from college friend and fellow musical traveler of Steve Simpson – Howard Richoux – October 25th, 2016:
“Hi – I attended college with Steve for the year he was at Doane College (Crete Nebraska) and enjoyed playing and singing with him. I actually put a hole in his guitar while carrying it back to the dorm after a “coffee house” in the campus center on an icy sidewalk. I still feel bad about it…
I do have a copy of the album and am in the process of converting it to MP3 – not happy with the first try. I had a small stack of them, but they are long since gone during some previous move. I will post here when I have a good conversion and someone can figure out the copyright ownership issues.
I am sad to learn of his passing, but that is starting to be more frequent these days as we age (gracefully or not).”
In response to my inquiry regarding the most likely unreleased Struggler 45 listed below, Howard responds:
“I just saw the entry on the website My guess would be that these would be the cuts from the album and both were Steve originals. I had such admiration for his ability to put together memorable words and tunes – tried to encourage him to do more, but I don’t recall any other compositions not on the album.
Howard is now striving to make contact with Steve’s family in order to return a notebook of Steve Simpson musical compositions he has had in his safe keeping since those long-ago college days.
