From the Land of Band Box Records

Twistin’ Freezin’ and Rockin’ with Orlie

Band Box - Orlie and Saints

Orlie was Orlie Trujillo, composer of the Band Box single “Twist and Freeze U.S.A (b/w “King Kong”) and Dave Barhite was the leader of the Saints. The only time that Dave and the Saints teamed up with Orlie Trujillo –was to back him on ”Twist and Freeze”. After those sessions at Band Box, Dave and the Saints would not perform with Orlie again.

The song was marketed by Band Box with the intention of capturing local metro markets –and thus not only “Twist and Freeze U.S.A.” but multiple releases containing the same label number (253) but with a slight title variation such as “Twist and Freeze Denver”, “Twist and Freeze Baltimore” and on and on.  According to George Krieger—Esearcher for the Colorado Music Hall of Fame, 18 versions were released for various big-city markets.  The “Twist and Freeze was a dual combination of cashing in on the national dance craze “The Twist” first released by Hank Ballard in April of 1959 and followed by Chubby Checker in August of 1960 –and targeting city markets as did Tommy Facenda with “High School U.S. A.” on Atlantic records –with 28 versions. That record went to number 28 in 1959.

Band Box’s shot at a national break out did not materialize, and probably realized little beyond the “28,000″ copies sold referenced in a February 1961 advertisement appearing in Billboard Magazine,  According to Dave Barhite, the Saints along with Orlie were invited to debut the record on American Bandstand, and on the day of their scheduled departure from Denver to Philadelphia, a massive winter storm hit Denver.  Subsequently the performance was cancelled and not rescheduled.  A Blog post in Europe states that the single actually entered “the Belgium charts” in 1962. The Denver version is illustrated here.

This advertisement in Billboard Magazine illustrates the connection between Band Box Records and Jimmy Meyers who worked and composed for Bill Haley and The Comets and was the co-composer of “Rock Around The Clock”.  Meyers recorded on Band Box records as “Jimmy DeKnight”.

  1. Does anyone know where or “IF” there is anyway to get a copy of the
    “DENVER TWIST & FREEZE” ?????
    Vinyl, Tape or CD

  2. There is a cd containing every version of High School U.S.A. by Tommy Facenda. Is there a cd containing every version of Twist And Freeze U.S.A. by Orlie & The Saints? If not there should be.

    • I am not aware of any CD’s featuring any of the Band Box artists. Master tapes exist of the catalog but held by Band Box owner family members. These were for sale in the 1990’s but withdrawn by the owner for purchase.
