Checker Long Play Records

Checker Record Label Long Play Discography

Following is a listing of Checker Long Plays from the first release on catalog number 1428 using the Chess numbering series in 1957 then moving on to the 2900 series beginning in 1959 with Tab Smith’s long play “Keeping Tab” and finally to the last 1969 issue by Little Milton – Checker 3011 “Grits Ain’t Groceries”.

The Chess family of labels was sold in late 1969 for nearly seven million dollars.  Albums would continue to be released by the new owners – General Recorded Tapes (GRT) under the consolidated Chess/Cadet labels into 1975.

According to Chess Records biographer Nadine Cohodas, the move by Leonard Chess to create the Checker label was due to what appeared to be a reluctance by radio stations to be somewhat reluctant to include too many songs by the same label on their play lists/surveys.  There was that but also fiscal considerations such as bank loans, taxes and more.

Checker LP 2978 – The Vibrations – “Watusi”

The Vibrations had earlier recorded “Stranded in the Jungle” as The Jayhawks in Los Angeles – Their song “Watusi” lifted Hank Ballard’s melody from his hit “Let’s Go, Let’s Go, Let’s Go”.  The group would ‘moonlight’ on another label – Arvee – performing as “The Maratons” recording the song “Peanut Butter” which charted nationally.

Leonard Chess countered by releasing the song on his Argo label in the Spring of 1961.

Checker LP 2979 – Sugar Pie DeSanto – “Sugar Pie”

Chess brought Sugar Pie over from the West Coast where she had started off with Johnny Otis as a very young teenager.  Chess was looking for another female singer based on success with Etta James.  The move paid off instantly with her placing three songs on the national charts simultaneously in early 1961 – making her the Chess family most successful artist since Chuck Berry had landed as many hits in 1955/1956.
