Chris Barber’s Jazz Band

Image result for the vipers skiffle band

While the Chris Barber Jazz Band in it’s various formations – grew out of New Orleans traditional jazz – Chris and his band mates were the first proponents of what would become “Skiffle” music as practiced in the U.K., alternating between jazz and the uninhibited music delivered during performance breaks and referred to as “breakdowns”.

The Chris Barber Selected Discography – Skiffle-Era 1954-1958

Presented here are a several of Chris Barber’s early endeavors.  Interestingly, his band first charted post-skiffle era with the tune “Pettite Fleur” which reached number 3 in early 1959.  None of their skiffle-era songs made the charts mainly because those releases were primarily jazz derived and drawing from Blues influences.  A few of these are presented here during the time that Lonnie Donegan was with the ensemble.  He departed in 1956 when he decided to tour the United States as a skiffle act in the Spring of 1956.
