Michael Johnson – The Alamosa Phenom!

Michael Johnson was born in Alamosa and moved to Denver where he attended high school.

Michael Johnson dated a neighbor of mine so I would from time-to-time see and hear him over on her front porch strumming his guitar.  Michael attended Denver North High School and catholic school Holy Family.  He attended Colorado State University in Fort Collins.

He hadn’t secured any fame as of then (late 1960’s) – but went on to join up Randy Sparks (New Christy Minstrels) in The New Society.  Next he joined up with John Denver in the Mitchell Trio (without Chad) and they soon became Denver/Boise & Johnson.  He scored on the Hot 100 four times with two entering the Top 20 – “Bluer Than Blue” #12 and “This Night Won’t Last Forever” #19.  He had two additional recordings enter the “Bubbling Under The Hot 100” charts as well.

His first label was Atco records where he released one LP and then he moved on to RCA Records when he transitioned easily becoming a country-western star with nine charting records and two number 1 hits between 1985 and 1988.

Michael’s performance schedule over the years was intensive – playing hundreds of venues – initially concentrated on the college circuit and later in his career when he moved to country music – the C&W circuit.  He made appearances in the Denver area including in July of 1975 at the Regency Room of the Oxford Hotel, and the Rainbow Theater in September of 1986 (with John Prine).  In 1988 he appeared in Breckenridge.  Perhaps his first known appearance in the Denver area was at the College Inn in east Denver at Colorado Blvd., and 8th Avenue – on April 25th, 1970.

Michael’s final appearance was in the State of Minnesota where he was adored on February 11th in New Brighton.  Subsequent concerts were cancelled due to his serious illness.

Michael Johnson passed away on July 25th, 2017 at the age of 72 after his  battle with cancer.
