Colorado’s Country Trucker & Mayor

C. W. McCall ranks a bit of distance behind John Denver and just ahead of Michael Johnson as Colorado’s most successful country artist.  Another transplant, was William Dale Fries, Jr., born in 1928 in Iowa.   He pulled his performing name from advertisements for Old Home Bread for the Metz Baking Company based on a fictitious trucker.

McCall made his way to Colorado and eventually became mayor of Ouray, Colorado in the southwestern part of the state.  His biggest hit was “Convoy” which was number one on the Country charts for six weeks, one week on Billboard’s Hot 100 in the top spot, and launched a movie and a Citizen’s Band trend that swept the country.  I recall the oh-so-many “handles” adopted by young and old – male and female everywhere!  Later in 1977 his “Roses for Mama” would go to #2 Country.
