Paul Whiteman – Colorado Music Hall of Fame Inductee

Hall of Fame Inductee Display

WP - PAUL WHITEMAN

Paul Whiteman was a Denver High School student and many claim he graduated from East High.   A recent book on the topic of Denver’s West Side disputes this claim saying that Whiteman was expelled from East as well as three or four other Denver High Schools.

There is evidence that he finished up his high school years attending Denver West – though it is not known if he earned a degree there.

His jazz band is one of the top 10 recording acts of all time.  Paul had the distinction of being the first musician to record on Capitol Records, a label which was formed by an alliance of composer/musician Johnny Mercer, producer Buddy DeSylvia and Wallachs’ Record Store in Hollywood which was first opened in 1940 and located on the famous corner of Sunset and Vine.

Paul Whiteman was most prolific during the 78 rpm era and thus I have set up a separate page listing his early recordings.
