Colorado Pop: Back to School
The colleges, universities and community schools of all levels – junior high and high school in Colorado released many LP’s on vinyl through the years – Many were released on the Century Records label which was headquartered on 995 South Clermont Street in Denver. I believe Century may have been affiliated with a parent company out in California.

East High School – Denver
East High School was founded in the location where it stands today just off Colfax on Esplanade Street. The school has a rich history of accomplishing alumni in all fields of professional life. The musicians who have risen out of East is indeed impressive including Judy Collins, jazz guitarist Bill Frisell, Ron Miles Jazz Trumpeter who also attended The University of Denver, jazz singer Diane Reeves – who attended both East and George Washington, Five Iron Frenzy band member Reese Roper, and Donnette Thayer who solo’d and was a member of the bands Hex and Game Theory.
Along with Judy Collins, four other East High Grads stand out very prominently. Three individuals were members of the r&b super group Earth, Wind and Fire during it’s most successful years – They are Phillip Bailey, Andrew Woolfolk and Larry Dunn and they were all class mates at East. Bailey remains today as the on-stage leader of Earth, Wind and Fire and has received numerous recognition awards both as a member of the group and as an individual including induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in both categories.
Paul Whiteman stands out as founder and leader of what is likely the most successful big band of all time – landing more than 200 recordings in the popular records charts in the U.S. and logging in 29 number one singles!
Another noted East alumni is Kenny Passarelli – bass player for The Beast. After the 1960’s he would work with Joe Walsh in Colorado and Elton John – both of whom recorded at the Caribou Ranch studio outside Nederland, Colorado.

Palmer High School (Colorado Springs)
Palmer started off as Colorado Springs High School in 1870. The school mascot was originally the Terrors with a logo mascot “Eaglebeak” which was in modern times deemed “racist” by a would-be legislator. Ironically the team mascot was designed and named by a Native American Indian student. Today the school mascot is an Eagle and still named “Eaglebeak”.
Noted former students include ESPN Gameday host Chris Fowler, controversial cyclist Lance Armstrong and NBA Oklahoma Thunder player Reggie Jackson.

South High School (Denver)
South High has its origins in 1893 when it shared classroom space with underclassmen in a two room school called Grant School. In 1925 funds were finally appropriated to build the current structure on Louisiana Street in the Washington Park district of Denver.
Alumni Tim Gilbert and John Carter became members of The Rainy Daze as was brother Kip Gilbert. Carter penned the number one hit “Incense and Peppermints” for the Strawberry Alarm Clark. Other noted alumni include Verne Byers – nightclub owner and local businessman and Nick Willhite former major league baseball pitcher.
