Pomus - Shuman

Mort Shuman & Doc Pomus

Pomus and Shuman – usually together – penned more than 100 songs which entered the Billboard charts.  Pomus – who was 10 years senior to Shuman had first success with Lavern Baker’s “My Happiness Forever” which reached number 9 on the Billboard R&B charts in 1956.  Lavern was backed by the Gliders on that single.  His next charting record was by Ray Charles’ “Lonely Avenue” topping out at number 6 on the R&B charts also in 1956.

It was the following year which marked a turning point for Pomus.  Two young writers reworked a song which Doc claims to have originated “Youngblood”.  The song took off for Californians Mike Stoller and Jerry Leiber reaching number 6 on the Hot 100 and number 1 on the R&B charts.  Pomus shared label composition credits with the two lads and the resulting royalty checks transformed Pomus to a writer of hit records! His last chart record was in 2006 “Save The Last Dance For Me” by Michael Bublé (#95 Hot 100).  In a fitting final tribute – just the year before in 2005 – a string of Pomus’ Elvis hits resurfaced in the U.K. all entering the top five.  Doc passed away in 1991.

Mort Shuman first teamed up with Doc in 1958 with the long-forgotten “White Bucks and Saddle Shoes by Bobby Pedrick Jr., which ended up at #79.  Their first Top Ten success was Fabian’s “Turn Me Loose” (#9, 1959).  Shuman also passed away in 1991.

The Pomu & Shuman Hit Tally:

66 songs entering the Hot 100 (or “Bubbling Under”)

39 songs entering other charts (R&B – Country – Adult Contemporary or the U.K.)

105 total chart songs

20 songs entered Billboard Top 20

14 songs entered Billboard Top 10

2 songs achieved Billboard’s #1 position

  2. His Latest Flame topped out at 6 in the US? That’s one of the best Elvis songs. The UK must have better taste.

    • Actually it peaked at number 4 – corrected now – held off by Bobby Vee’s “Take Good Care of My Baby” (#1), that folk oldie “Michael” by the Highwaymen (#2) and The Jive Five’s “My True Story” (#3)
