Sedaka & Greenfield

Sedaka & Greenfield

Neil Sedaka attended the same high school (Abraham Lincoln) as both Howard Greenfield and fellow Brill Building composer Mort Shuman.  Through Shuman the young song writing team met Jerome (“Doc”) Pomus who they strongly admired.  Abraham Lincoln was also the high school of future fellow travelers – the Tokens as well as Brill Building composer Neil Diamond.  Pomus and Shuman would become their avenue into the Brill Building scene.  Sedaka would follow a similar path as Carol King – writing as part of duo for many others but most often for himself.  Carol would move into this vein during the 1970’s and Neil would experience a resurgence during that “singer/song writer” period as well.

Neil started off in a group called the Linc-Tones along with Hank Medress, Eddie Rapkin and Cynthia Zoltin.  Sedaka and Greenfield teamed up to write most of the groups numbers.  In short order the group changed their name to the Tokens.  This line-up would disperse leaving only Medress in the lineup which hit big with “The Lion Sleeps Tonight”.  Sedaka was comfortable breaking out as a solo and eventually signing with RCA.  His first chart action was “The Diary” in late 1958 – topping out at a respectable number 14.  His first entry into the Top Ten was his ode to Carol Klein (King) “Oh Carol” peaking at number 9.

Greenfield was not a performer but a steady and proficient song writer often partnering up with other Brill Building composers and enjoying a long string of pop hits.  Greenfield passed away at a very young 49 years of age in 1986.  Both Neil and Howard were inducted into the Song Writers Hall of Fame.
