From the Land of Band Box Records

Johnny Mercer and Pied Pipers

Johnny Mercer transcended musical eras – from his earliest days starting in 1934 with his first appearance with “P.S. I Love You” by Rudy Valee & His Conneticut Yankees to his last appearance in 2012 (there will probably be more) by Jools Holland and Rumer with Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate the Postive”.  Johnny wrote and sang – as a solo and with groups – hitting the top of the charts 11 times, entering the Top Ten 45 times and charting on the pop charts on 113 occasions.  Johnny died young – at the age of 67 in 1976.

He turned out standards with ease – and shined above many others during World War II.  His earliest hits included “Goody, Goody”, “Tangerine”, “Skylark” and so many others.  He cranked out #1’s by Glenn Miller (“Fools Rush In”), Al Donahue (“Jeepers Creepers”), Bing Crosby (“Too Marvelous For Words”), Woody Herman (“Blues In The Night”), Louis Jordan (“G.I. Jive”), and his self-performed “Ac-Cent”.

Naturally his song would go on to be performed time and time again for all generations to enjoy.  The 45 RPM era is partially represented below.  Visit Johnny Mercer’s complete song catalog at the Song Writer’s Hall of Fame.
