From the Land of Band Box Records

The Bay Area Bands from the Golden Haight-Ashbury Era – “K” through “Z”

These groups were all local to the San Francisco/Bay Area sound, with many residing in the Haight-Ashbury Neighborhood adjoining Golden Gate Park. Many others migrated into the Bay scene – residing in nearby communities or taking on a sort of ‘temporary resident’ status.

(All recordings displayed are pre 1970)

Robinson, Hammon and Manning had all previously been in an Ohio band called “The Old Time Jug Band”.

The Mark V

The Marksmen

The Martells

The Masked Marauders

I remember when this LP hit with all the mystery and hype in 1969 promoted by Rolling Stone magazine as a “super session” – In reality the members were all drawn from the Berkeley jug and skiffle community – The group was actually assembled to match the conjured up story in RS – The ensuing LP managed a 12 week run on the Hot 200 LP charts peaking at number 114.

PS:  The so called “Marauders” were supposed to be John and Paul along with Mick Jagger and Bob Dylan)

Group Members: Brian Voorheis – Phil Marsh – Annie Johnston – Anna Rizzo – Allen Chance – Vic Smith – Landon Winner – Gary Salzman – Mark Voorheis

Four members were from “The Cleanliness & Godliness Skiffle Band” – Vic Smith was earlier with “The Second Coming” followed by “Sky Blue” – Marsh had been in a early area group called “Honey Baked Ham”.
