Steve Alaimo

Steve Alaimo – was very active and very popular for a nice stretch in the 1950’s and particularly the 1960’s has the unique distinction of being the only musician to place the most singles on the Hot 100 (nine) without any entering the Top 40. (He also placed an amazing 11 songs on either the Billboard “Bubbling Under” charts or the combined “Music Vendor” and “Record World” equivalent to the “Bubbling Under” charts – eliminating any redundant listings.

Alaimo was born the Nebraska in the town of Omaha and not long after moved with is family to New York.  He entered into the world of rock and roll in the late 1950’s when he became guitarist/vocalist for his cousin’s band “The Red Coats”.  The band would release five singles from 1959 up into 1961 on Marlin Records (2), Dickinson, Dade,  Lifetime and Imperial (1 each).

Steve’s career was given a boost in 1965 when he landed a ‘regular’ spot on Dick Clark’s “Where the Action Is”, which ran for two years.  In addition to performing he also would become the program’s co-producer.

Alaimo would sign on with Atco/Atlantic Records in the later 1960’s recording solo and producing for Sam and Dave and Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes.  He had involvement with many other artists such as Betty Wright, Timmy Thomas, George McCrae and K.C. and the Sunshine Band to name a few.

In 1968 Alaimo released a Colorado linked tune “Denver” on the Atco label (Denver being my home town)

Steve Alaimo is still out there – in his 80’s – probably plugging away somewhere in the world of music.
