Good old Sam Phillips at Sun Records.  Thank goodness he had the insight and tenacity to stick with his love of music and for having an ear for ‘that different kind of music’ which would help shape the future for what would become known as rock and roll.Image result for sam phillips

Sam Phillips was born on January 5th, 1923 in Florence, Alabama Samuel Cornelius Phillips.

Phillips first journey into the world of music was to work as a disc jockey in Muscle Shoals, Alabama (early 1940’s) before finding his way to Memphis, Tennessee landing a production job at a recording company.

His first recordings were generally blues musicians, with Phillips selling the tracks to record labels (including the Bihari brothers in Los Angeles and a bit later to the Chess brothers in Chicago).

He launched his own label – Sun – in 1952.  Tons of musicians paraded through the studio and his labels released a plethora of singles for over one-and-a-half decades.

The Sun story has been oft-told – is very well documented and nothing further needs to be added to the mix here.

One very interesting publication which came out awhile back was “Memphis Belles – The Women of Sun Records” by Hank Davis – which has been reviewed here previously.  That one is definitely worth a purchase – delving into a previously ignored subject – the women who passed through the Sun Studios (the book is chock full of great historic photos of these remarkable rocking women).

On this page I’ve presented a graphic discography of the the Sun long plays as well as the fun extended plays (extended plays are always a lot of fun).  And no, none of Sam Phillip’s women made it onto the longer format recordings. Sad.

Sun Records was sold by Sam in 1969 (the same year Chess Records was sold) to Shelby Singleton of Mercury Records.  Sun continued to release material from it’s vast master vaults in long play formats and digital formats – long after the passing of the great Sun Records Era!

Sun Records continues to this day operating as the “Sun Entertainment Corporation”.  SEC has certainly taken advantage of their master vault packaging and re-packaging over and over with tons of releases throughout the world.  Very little U.S. Elvis Presley repackages on vinyl but some nice digital packages made available.  SEC today offers vinyl, merchandise under the banner “Sun Record Company” on their web site.

Sam Phillips has the distinction of being the first non-performing figure inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (1987).  He is also in the Alabama Music Hall of Fame, The Blues Hall of Fame, the Memphis Music Hall of Fame and the Country Music Hall of Fame.  Well deserved.

Sam Phillips passed away on July 30th, 2003 at the age of 80.
