The British Invasion: August 14th, 1965

Twinkle was indeed a “beautiful” girl (see our earlier Blog).  True to Tollie Records’ claim – “Terry” did reach the upper heights of the British Pop Charts – all the way to number 4 in November, 1964.  She would chart one additional time in the U.K. with “Golden Lights” a Top 30 hit in February, 1965.  I picked up this record and picture sleeve recently on Ebay.  It was the first time I had seen the U.S. sleeve offered.

Rita Pavone

Developed quite a following in Europe – especially in her homeland – Italy – and also in Spain.  The landed on the U.S. charts right in the thick of the early Invasion with “Remember Me” which peaked at number 24.  She managed two additional minor chart makers “Just Once More” (#123 Summer of 1964) and finally “Wait For Me” at #104 in October of the same year.  The picture sleeve shown below is not too common.

Swinging Blues Jeans & Escorts

The Billboard ad below announced a joint U.S. tour in 1965 of the Swinging Blue Jeans with England’s Escorts.  The Escorts formed sometime in 1962.  They obtained a U.S. recording deal on Fontana – but failed to chart.  The orignal lineup included John Foster (drums), Terry Sylvester (guitar), Mike Gregory (bass), John Kinrade (lead guitar), and Ray Walker (vocals).  Walker came from the Del Renas – and early group rising out of the Skiffle Era.  The Escorts were intertwined with the Swinging Blue Jeans with Sylvester joining their line-up in early 1966.  He would be joined by Mike Gregory later in 1967.  Several others would pass through their ranks – with most notable member being Paddy Chambers who took over vocals in late 1966.  Chambers performed with many Beat Groups including Faron’s Flamingos, The Dominoes, Steve Bennett & the Syndicate – and later on with Paddy, Klaus and Gibson.
