Radio Station KIMN Internal Staff Newsletters 1965 thru 1966
Roy Kendall – the Canada Kid – Collector Extraordinaire!
KIMN’s program directors authored these internal station newsletters. I obtained them from a gentleman in Canada who inherited them from a friend:
“My friend Roy Kendall passed away in Dec. 2020 and left me a huge music collection as well as radio surveys.
He started, along with his best friend at the time, sending letters to stations across the U.S. in 1966 and continued to about 1970. He must have spent all his allowance on stamps. I know his parents were very supportive. His mother used to collect the local weekly surveys for him as she was working in downtown Victoria. He had poor health as a kid so that kept him indoors and probably listening to the radio a lot. His friend and him even made up their own charts probably taking turns listening to different stations mainly in Vancouver and Washington state.
Back in the day you would typically get a response from someone you wrote requesting information. Most stations would send out a few recent ones and request a stamped envelope for any in the future. He had kept the letters he received from program directors who were generally fascinated that someone had that as a hobby. A couple of stations apologized and were sending his nickel back as they did not have a Top 40 chart.
Can you imagine! And people were so honest back then. KIMN was by far the most obliging station as evidence of all the charts they sent him and for that length of time. Even stations that couldn’t help would send him a response. He had only one bad response from a guy who was very condescending because Roy had not sent a return envelope. He said he had retrieved his letter from the garbage so he could tell Roy he didn’t appreciate what he was trying to do. Very funny actually to read. I wonder how long that guy lasted dealing with the public.
He had a letter from Bill Gavin among others. And any Canadians working at stations would always drop him a line. I counted close to 4000 surveys that were mailed to him from about 350 stations. There are surveys from every state except Wyoming and Hawaii. If you know of anyone collecting a certain state or states let me know. The slow response was due to me coming back to Victoria for about a month and busy with day to day things. I will send along anything else I think you might be interested in. Take care.”
