DUSTY DRAPES & THE DUSTERS (LONGMONT)
Founding Members: Steve (“Dusty”) Swenson, Don DeBacker and Don McCorison
The following is from a Post on this site based on my conversation with band acquaintance Cass:
In the early 1970’s Cass was girlfriend of a member of a local Boulder rock group. Cass could not recall a band name at their beginnings. But then she recalled “I was living with the band in a communal arrangement on a farm located out on the eastern end of the city off of Arapahoe street. The farm was called “Green Acres” like the television show with Eddie Alpert.”
Cass continued, “All of the band members lived there along with about seven young women including myself. The guys all sported shoulder length hair and as I remember played all around town doing mostly cover material. They were’ very popular.” The band took on a new name, “Dusty Drapes and The Dusters” and then set out on their new course.
The founders of the group were Steve (“Dusty”) Swenson, Don DeBacker and Don McCorison. Swenson had played guitar on a very minor hit in 1972, “Colorado” performed by Colorado’s Danny Holien released on the local “Tumbleweed” label.
They played all around the Boulder area, most of which are long since gone. These included Shannon’s, the Skunk Creek Inn, Olympic Lounge, Good Earth, Art’s Bar and Grill and at Peggy’s Hi-Lo.
Somewhere along the way the group was signed by Columbia Records and managed one release in 1975 composed by McCorison “Hackensack”, which evidently was a one-out adventure on the national label.
On a side note Cass remembered that there was a lot of livestock on the farm. The most famous resident was the University of Colorado’s school mascot “Ralphie” the bison. “Every few weeks during football season a trailer would pull up and Ralphie’s handlers would load her (yes Ralphie was and always is a female) into a trailer to transport her to the big fame at Folsom Field.”
Then a big change came along. Cass recalls coming back to Green Acres one day after work and was somewhat stunned by what she saw. “All of the guys had cut off their long hair. My boyfriend told me, ‘Cass, were making big change. We’ve decided to go country.’”
And go country is exactly what they did becoming “Rusty Drapes and the Drapers”. The band enjoyed a very nice run through the 1970’s. They associated with many other musicians who were drawn to the local Colorado scene. Cass recalls meeting Steven Stills and Manassas, Timothy B. Schmidt and Rusty Young from Poco and many others when they would either rehearse or record in the studio at Green Acres. She recalls a photo session taking place at Green Acres for one of Poco’s LP covers.
Cass moved on from Boulder, attending D.U. for a time – living here and there before finally settling down in North Carolina where she remains till this day. Cass visited Boulder a few years back to discover that Green Acres is gone, having made way for “progress”.
Here is a nice article written in 2012 when members of The Dusters reunited.

RAY DURKEE
Ray Durkee was a local Denver radio personality and DJ who hosted the wonderful “Sunday at the Memories” radio show on KHOW and much to my delight I just “discovered” the “Sunday at the Memories” show which has been rejuvenated by Ray’s son, James Durkee on “Cruisin’ 950” on Sunday evenings!
James Durkee has also created a tremendous historical and entertaining tribute to his late father with his “Sunday at the Memories” web site complete with programs, great photos, a biography and much more! Click on the image above to visit the site.
He brought more than the music to life during his broadcast with his casual but well informed presentation of the past. My fondest memories of Ray was our visits to Denver’s London House nightclub where he would spin records, chat with the audience in his laid back style – and do the best rock and roll trivia in the town. I one day listening to him during his broadcast when he talked about “The Cosmonaut” record below. It was listed in a global record price guide and he really got a kick out of that. He said “I’ve got myself a collectible record!”
Ray Durkee started off in Denver at KOSI, 1959. That job lasted a very short time. He went to KTLN for a year or so. KTLN sent him to their sister station in Arizona in 1961. In late 1962 he came back to KTLN in Denver. He did TRAFFIC pilot work for KTLN mid 60’s, weather may have been also a part, but the plane he was flying was for traffic reporting. He passed away in Bismarck, North Dakota, not South Dakota.

JERRY DYCKE (FLORIDA)
Jerry is a Florida native who put out a few releases on this Colorado Springs label – Aries – He was inducted into the Florida Country Music Association Hall of Fame in 1994 – Visit the Jerry Dycke web site – Below is an account from Jerry relating to his own Aries label and this story behind “Starship, Fly On”
“The record was recorded in a little studio in Ft Myers, Fl (Link Brothers) in 1986 and release on my own label Aries that I had started in the 60’s. I have also been on Sun Records in Memphis, Nugget and MCA Churchill in Nashville also. Songs you can see on YouTube. “Starship Fly On” was adopted by the U.S. Space foundation as the official song of the Challenger 7 fund in 1986. They made a video of it which you can see on YouTube. The video was produced by John Biffar who when on to win several Emmys during his career. The reason the Colorado Springs address is on the label is because I donated the song to the U.S Space Foundation (located in Colo Springs). They sold the video and record from that address. The video was shown on CMT-TV many times. They ran the Space Foundations phone number and address for people to order the video or record. They returned the copyright to me after 3 years and say they made a lot of money for the Challenger 7 project through its sales. Jerry

Jerry is a Florida native who put out a few releases on this Colorado Springs label – Aries – He was inducted into the Florida Country Music Association Hall of Fame in 1994 – Visit the Jerry Dycke web site – Below is an account from Jerry relating to his own Aries label and this story behind “Starship, Fly On”:
Jerry”
