LOUISE HARRISON (CALDWELL)
Yes – the sister of Beatle George rambled into Denver in 1965 and sat down with KIMN DJ’s to answer questions about her famous brother and his co-horts. Here is an account of an earlier effort to promote an up-til-then unknown Fab Four in the U.S. “Not long after settling in southern Illinois in 1963, an ocean from her native England, Louise Harrison Caldwell trudged from one radio station to the next lobbying for air time for her brother’s quartet. Revered in Britain, the group was virtually unknown in America — and her promotion fizzled.” Read the entire story at the Las Vegas Review Journal article from early 2014 – Louise is now in her 80’s!
The KIMN survey below is from November 11th, 1964 when Louise was interviewed by the KIMN Boss Jocks and answered calls from fans live on the air. The survey that week ironically was dominated by British Invasion groups with the Zombies sitting in the top spot – but with the surprising absence of a single Beatle track – something I would not have thought possible in any week in 1964!

SPENCER HAYWOOD
Spencer has the distinction of being the first college basketball player to come out of college early – prior to graduation to sign a professional contract. Haywood attended Trinidad Jr. College for a year in southern Colorado. He then became the high scorer for the U.S. Olympic Team in 1968 before transferring to The University of Detroit.
He entered the professional draft, but NBA rules prevented him from being drafted early. And so he entered the ABA in 1969 as a member of the Denver Rockets. Haywood lead the ABA in scoring and rebounding and was named Rookie of the Year after leading the Rockets to a Western Division Title. The Rockets advanced to the second round of the playoffs before falling to the L.A. Stars.
Spencer was also selected as MVP in the 1970 ABA All-Star Game. He jumped to the NBA in 1970 joining the Seattle Super Sonics. A legal battle ensued landing in the Supreme Court – and finally being settled in his favor. Haywood went on to appear in several NBA All Star Games. Sadly, his career was cut short by drug addiction.
However, Haywood’s journey opened the door for all future players to sign professional contracts before or during college.
Ironically, Haywood’s high school teammate in Detroit, Ralph Simpson, also broke out of college early also joining the Denver Rockets and becoming the second player to do so coming out of Michigan State college after two years. He remained with the Rockets until they merged with the NBA at which time he joined his home town Detroit Pistons.
Simpson would return to Denver as a Nugget a few years later but his production fell off dramatically. He played for a short time with the Philadelphia 76ers and finally the New Jersey Nets before retiring in 1980.
I met Ralph Simpson in the 1990’s at a nearby neighborhood basketball gym in Aurora, Colorado. He was raising a family and had settled down in the Denver area. I asked him if he would care to play on my men’s basketball team and he agreed to do so – giving me his phone number – but shortly after he was offered a high-school coaching position and so my team’s chance to have a Denver Nugget top ten all time scorer vanished.

CREIGHTON ‘NICK’ HOLLEY
About a month ago I received an email from a British record collector inquiring about a 45 I had posted on the 45 Cat (Catalog).
The record in question was released on a Denver label – most likely a one-off since the label catalog number was a very elementary “001”. I could not recall posting this single and so I referred the Brit to a few of the Colorado record collecting ‘all-stars’ up and down the front range.
Turns out that I had obtained the images quite a while back from one of the all-stars during a trading/scanning session. In many ways I am a rather fickle collector, often being content with the discovery of a Colorado based artist or label or composer – and not necessarily compelled to locate the actual record. And now comes the most damaging confession of all…. I quite often purchase a record AND NEVER PLAY IT!!!
Okay, that little admission is now out of the way so back to the M.B.C. recording by “Boulevard”.
No one I have spoken with, including the Colorado owner of the record shown above knows a single thing about the label, the group or American Recording. My Boulevard-owning record buddy did a little research after being contacted and made the decision to place his copy on EBay via Denver’s premier and historic vinyl store, “Wax Trax”.
I learned about this when meeting up with him at the Denver Record Expo late last month (April). “How did the bidding go?” I inquired. Without so much as even looking up from a stack of 45’s he replied. “I sold it.” Plain and simple answer. “How much?” was a natural follow-up. “A little over $1,100” was his reply.
In reality the record brought a figure closer to $1,200 with 11 bids. Nearly every bid came out of Great Britain as did the winning one.
This song is very big with some Brits. Since that sale I have heard from another U.K. collector who has the same or higher interest level in not only owning the recording, but knowing more about “Boulevard”.
Denver magazine “Westword” reporter Dave Herrera reported in early January of 2012 the news that Denver jazz musician Creighton “Nick” Holley had passed away at the age of 65 from cancer.
We learn from that obituary that Holley had fronted his own group the “Creighton Holley Band” Dan Treanor performing often at a Denver spot “Herb’s Hideout”.
Herrera further reported that Holley had – for a time – played with “The Rhythm Kings” in Chicago, a group show casing Gene Barge, a Virginia-born sax player who founded the instrumental group “The Church Street Five” famously backing Gary ‘U.S.’ Bonds on his many Legrand records releases. Barge picked up the moniker “Daddy G” from a co-composition of his “A Night With Daddy G”. A Denver Post obit speaks of Holley being in Chicago in the early 1990’s taking over lead vocals for the late blues singer – Larry Nolan who fronted “Big Twist and the Mellow Fellows”.
The Post reported that Holley missed the Denver scene, and elected to return where he teamed up with drummer Mark Emmons and vocalist Laura Newman in the band “AOA”.
Eventually Barge would migrate to Chicago recording often as a studio musician especially for Chess Records, and eventually finding his way into the “Rhythm Kings” where Holley would make his acquaintance and for a short time become the lead singer for the group. I haven’t been able to determine whether this stint in the Windy City was earlier on before his “Big Twist” venture.

From Westword 2014: “Longtime members Pete Wernick, Nick Forster, Tim O’Brien and Charles Sawtelle met at the Denver Folklore Center in the late 1970s. They worked there in various capacities — as music instructors, instrument repairmen or at the store. Wernick and Sawtelle had a band called the Rambling Drifters that played the Folklore Center’s venue every Tuesday, and Forster and O’Brien often joined them as sidemen. The collaborations gradually got more formal; Wernick, O’Brien and Sawtelle contributed to each other’s solo records, and the three decided to form a band called Hot Rize.”
