This group formed in 1980’s out of The University of Colorado. Members were students Sean Kelly and Andy Sheldon who were joined in 1986 by drummer Jeep MacNichol and keyboard player Al Laughlin. They first performed at Tulagi’s on The Hill adjacent to the CU campus. Their name was derived from subsisting on samples from a local King Soopers store in Boulder.

From Carla’s web site: “Carla Sciaky is a multi-instrumentalist-folksinger-songwriter based in Denver, Colorado. As a soloist, she toured the US extensively throughout the 1980s and 90s, recording first on her own Propinquity Records and later on Green Linnet and Alacazam Records, compiling a discography of eight solo albums and appearing on many group efforts, compilations, and colleagues’ collections. A mostly University of Colorado student group who hit nationally. They were promoted locally by Jack Kaufman, the owner of Harmony Records who became known as the trumpet playing taxi driver. Kaufman’s store was located in downtown Denver next to Woolworth’s and he featured rhythm and blues discs. He distributed in the local area for Philips Records, King Records and a few others.
The group was inducted into the Colorado Music Hall of Fame in 2013.

This combo performed in the Diamond Belle bar/showplace in the famous Stater Hotel in Durango, Colorado. This recording is most likely from the 1960’s. The Diamond Belle continues to this day. The Hotel was constructed in 1887 by the Strater family – brothers Frank and Fred along with father Antone.

Pete Smythe with Chet Atkins at East Tincup
Pete was a Denver radio and early television mainstay. Broadcasting from “East Tincup” which was a reference to the western slope town near Taylor Reservoir – his show actually was situated in a Denver set studio which was presented as East Tincup’s general store. Visitors both local and national would enter the store and join in with Pete for musical numbers. These included Bob Hope, Duke Ellington, Burl Ives, Chet Atkins and others. He is accompanied on this LP by local musicians Steve Halpin (“Moat Watkins – drums), Al Brisson (“Rocky Head” – bass), and Pete on piano as “Elmy Elrod”.

The Pete Smythe Orchestra was a University of Colorado band where Smythe obtained a business degree graduating in 1934 – He also headed up a group called the “Whiz Bang Four”. Smythe passed away at the age of 88 in 2000.
