The King’s Ransom – Out of the Garage

The Kings Ransom.jpg

The King’s Ransom formed in 1965 out of Allenstown, Pennsylvania. Original members were Danny Roth (drums) – Vince Homick (rhythm guitar) – Ronnie Galland (keyboards) – Bob Dougherty (lead vocals) and Bob Wesley (lead guitar).

Later members would include Scoobie King – Glenn Zoski and Chuck Hoey.

They were regulars in the Allenstown area at the Lord’s Estate, the King’s Court and the Purple Owl to name three. They cut their first tracks in 1966 in a church. Not long after they released their single “Shame” b/w “Here Today Gone Tomorrow” which would be released in 1967.

Band members would compose three of the four tracks they recorded.

“Shame” would manage some local radio station air play but fell short nationally. The group would break up in mid 1968. A new “King’s Ransom” was formed by Mike Homick but there were no members of the original group involved

The King’s Ransom musical journey was short – and probably more typical of the seemingly infinite number of garage bands who popped up during the mid 1960’s across the land.

The Cherry Slush (Out Of the Garage)

The Cherry Slush formed in 1965 out of Saginaw coming together when they were still in junior high as the “Wayfarers”.

They would next become the “Captives”. The original members were Art Hauffe (bass), Dan Parsons (vocals), Dick Coughlin (drums), Tom Ambruster (rhythm guitar) and Mark Burdick (lead guitar). Tom’s family moved which reduced the band to a foursome.

They had their roots starting off as “Wayfarers” and then the “Bells of Rhymny. When they first came together they were still in junior high.

Their next name change would be the “Bells of Rhymny” inspired by Pete Seeger’s song. The Byrds were then their inspiration and they attempted to model their sound after the popular group.

Their first gig came opening for Detroit’s Terry Knight and the Pack in the summer of 1966. They would land a recording session and a single released on the Dicto record label.

Many personnel changes would follow – Band members would switch instruments and then a final name change to the “Cherry Slush”. They managed three singles under that name and their final single was released in 1969 – the group referred to simply as the “Slush”.

They made many TV appearances but by 1969 it was time to call it quits. There would be a few solo endeavors.

Keyboard player Brian Bennett passed away in December of 2016 age 65,
