Who…
was the girl behind the voice crooning over the top of the Crescendos on “Oh Julie”?
This is her – Janice Green and this was her only known single recording solo from 1958 about a year after “Oh Julie”. Beyond her brief moment on the hit record nothing more is known of Janice Green.
The Crescendos started off in 1957 as “The Spades” a group which included a female piano player named Joan.
They named themselves after a television 90 minute special. When they recorded “Oh Julie” Janice was then only 16 years old. She came from east Nashville.
“Oh Julie” actually charted higher on the R&B charts – number 4 than the Hot 100 – number 5 – The song would be the group’s first and last chart appearance. They released five singles – 3 on the Nasco label and 2 on the tiny Scarlet label out of Nashville. They also backed Janice on her two tracks on Nasco. She is often referred to as the “Oh Julie” girl and was cited as such on her Nasco recordings.
